What3Words Reference: stove.yards.supply

Location notes: W3W reference is for the middle of a group of 3 midway between the main path and the hedge next to the school playing field. Near the river inlet with the seat.

A deciduous tree up to 25metres tall with a rounded crown and smooth silver grey bark when young but with warts and fissures with age. It is native to North America and is the state tree of New Jersey; it was planted in Britain after 1920.

It is widley planted in parks becuase of its glorious red colouring in autumn.

It is not as valuable to wildlife as our common English oak but the catkins provide pollen and the acorns food for birds and small mammals.  However it is less susceptible to pests and pathogens than our own oaks but is not as strong. It is widley used for furniture making in the USA
